Education
We’re working hard to help young people in Butaleja stay in school through our small number of wide-reaching education projects.
One of the barriers to education for girls in the district is lack of access to sanitary items when they’re on their period. Many young girls drop out of school early because they can’t attend when they’re on their period and are missing so much of the school year. We teach women and girls throughout Butaleja how to make reusable menstrual pads (RUMPS) from easily accessible materials. This enables them to continue attending school and progress through the academic years.
Another barrier that gets in the way of children’s learning is hunger. Schools do not provide lunch and the long day of learning on an empty stomach is a struggle, impacting concentration and ultimately progression through school. Since 2011 we have supported almost 50 schools to establish on-site farms, where staff and children can learn sustainable methods of farming, and have school meals from the crops they harvest.
