75% of under 25 year olds in Uganda are unemployed. The majority of people graduating from school, college and university cannot find employment.
We want to nudge things in a positive direction, so we’re developing an apprenticeship programme. In 2014, we aim to set up three apprenticeships for young carpenters, but we hope to expand to other professions in 2015 and beyond.
The programme will involve working with three experienced carpenters – who are good at carpentry and business. They will be given support to develop their business (purchasing machinery) in exchange for taking on an apprentice. They’ll be responsible for giving the apprentice a monthly allowance, while we’ll provide the apprentice with some basic tools.
